The Slate-throated Whitestart (*Myioborus miniatus*) is a dazzling, hyperactive warbler of the New World, most commonly found flitting through the humid montane forests from Mexico down to Bolivia. Its most striking feature is a brilliant, fiery-red crown patch, starkly contrasted against a slate-gray hood and throat that gives the bird its name. The rest of its plumage is a rich, deep chestnut-red below, fading to a bright yellow belly and under-tail coverts, with a dark, white-edged tail that it fans constantly to flush out insects. A master of the "flush-and-chase" hunting technique, this bird uses its conspicuous white outer tail feathers as a visual lure, startling hidden prey into flight and then snapping them up in mid-air with acrobatic precision, making it a lively and unforgettable sight for any birder.

Faits amusants

Despite its flashy slate-gray hood and bright yellow belly, the Slate-throated Whitestart has a bizarre habit of flashing its namesake white tail feathers like a semaphore signal, a behavior called “tail-pumping” that flushes out hidden insects from dense foliage. It’s also a master of the “distraction display,” feigning a broken wing to lure predators away from its nest, then miraculously recovering. This species has a unique vocal trick: males and females duet in rapid-fire, alternating calls so precisely they sound like a single bird, a feat of coordination that helps defend their territory year-round.

Habitats et répartition

This warbler is found from northwestern Mexico through Central America and into the Andes of South America, extending as far south as northwestern Argentina. Its distribution is highly fragmented across this montane range, typically occurring at elevations between 1,000 and 3,000 meters. It inhabits the humid understory and edges of montane evergreen forests, cloud forests, and adjacent second-growth woodlands, where it is often seen actively foraging in mixed-species flocks.

Comportements & Reproduction

The Slate-throated Whitestart is generally monogamous, with pairs forming during the breeding season that typically coincides with the rainy season, from March to June in many parts of its range. Social structure is based on isolated pairs that defend a small territory, though they may join mixed-species foraging flocks outside of breeding. Males perform a courtship display involving wing-fluttering and tail-fanning to reveal the white outer tail feathers, while the female builds a domed nest with a side entrance, often placed in a bank, crevice, or on a steep slope. A unique reproductive strategy is the use of a false nest or “dummy cup” constructed near the real nest, which may function to distract predators or parasites. Clutch size is typically two to three white eggs with fine speckling, and only the female incubates, but both parents feed the altricial young.

Alimentation

The Slate-throated Whitestart is primarily an insectivore, with its diet consisting almost entirely of small arthropods such as beetles, caterpillars, ants, flies, and spiders. It actively forages in the understory and mid-levels of tropical forests, using a distinctive technique known as "flush-pursuit": it fans its white-tipped tail and flickers its wings to startle hidden insects into flight, then quickly snatches them in mid-air. Interestingly, this bird has been observed following army ant swarms to capture insects fleeing the columns, and it occasionally supplements its diet with small berries or fruit, particularly during the non-breeding season when insect prey may be less abundant.

Couleurs

The Slate-throated Whitestart has a slate-gray head, throat, and upperparts, contrasting sharply with a bright yellow belly and undertail coverts. Its most distinctive feature is a white outer tail feather pattern, flashed conspicuously during foraging, and a yellow wing patch. The black face mask and white eye arcs create a bold facial pattern, with no specific cryptic camouflage adaptations, as its coloration is for signaling rather than concealment.
