Morning activity at Aymara Lodge

An early start around Aymara Lodge, where the gardens and surrounding forest often offer excellent photographic opportunities before the day warms up. Hyacinth Macaws are regular visitors, alongside toucans, parrots, woodpeckers, and a changing cast of Pantanal birdlife. After breakfast, we continue exploring the nearby stretches of the Transpantaneira, stopping whenever wildlife or the light invites us to slow down.

Afternoon activity at Aymara Lodge

After a break during the hottest hours, we return to the Transpantaneira Road, one of the Pantanal’s richest wildlife corridors. Jabirus and Maguari Storks are often seen in the wetlands, together with herons, kingfishers, raptors, and caimans. We make our way back to Aymara Lodge in the softer evening light, with time for another walk around the gardens before dinner

Transfer Aymara Lodge –> SouthWild Pantanal Lodge

We leave Aymara Lodge and continue south along the Transpantaneira toward SouthWild Pantanal Lodge. Rather than driving straight through, we make regular photographic stops whenever wildlife or the light catches our attention, taking time to explore the wetlands along the way. After lunch, the journey continues at a relaxed pace, with more opportunities to photograph the rich birdlife and other wildlife that make the Transpantaneira one of the Pantanal’s most rewarding roads. We arrive at SouthWild Pantanal Lodge in the afternoon, with time to settle in and explore the surroundings before dinner.

Morning activity at SouthWild Pantanal Lodge

We spend the morning exploring the wetlands around the lodge, including a boat excursion through quiet channels where the reflections and soft light create excellent conditions for photography. Black-collared Hawks are regular sightings here, along with kingfishers, herons, jacanas, and a variety of other wetland birds.

Transfer SouthWild Pantanal Lodge –> Porto Jofre

We travel south along the Transpantaneira to Porto Jofre, keeping an eye out for wildlife along the way.

Afternoon sighting of Jaguar

Our first boat safari takes us along the rivers and forested banks in search of Jaguars. This region offers some of the best opportunities to observe and photograph these remarkable cats in the wild, while capybaras, caimans, giant otters, and a rich variety of birds often provide rewarding encounters throughout the afternoon.

Into Jaguar Country

We head out early into the waterways of Encontro das Águas State Park, navigating the junctions of the Cuiabá, Três Irmãos, and Piquiri rivers. This remarkable network of rivers is home to the highest known density of wild Jaguars, giving us exceptional opportunities to observe their behaviour in the cooler hours of the day.

Exploring the "Parque Estadual Encontro das Águas" (Meeting of the Waters)

As the light changes, we continue exploring the riverbanks, adapting our route to recent sightings and wildlife activity. Jaguars remain our main focus, but each outing is shaped by what the Pantanal offers—from quiet moments of a cat resting on the bank to more dynamic encounters, alongside Giant Otters, capybaras, caimans, and an abundance of birdlife. Throughout the day, we photograph from our small safari boats, allowing for low-angle perspectives and close engagement with the landscape.

Exploring the São Lourenço River

Today we leave the busier waterways behind and venture into the quieter channels of the Rio São Lourenço. With fewer boats and a slower pace, these remote areas offer a different perspective on the Pantanal, allowing us to explore without rushing from one sighting to the next.

Time with the Wildlife

We continue navigating the São Lourenço River, adapting our route to the day’s wildlife activity. The quieter setting often allows us to spend longer with a single subject, observing natural behaviour with minimal disturbance. Jaguars remain our primary focus, but Giant Otters, tapirs, caimans, and a rich variety of birds all contribute to the rhythm of the afternoon, offering opportunities for thoughtful observation and photography.

Adieu aux terres sauvages

fter a final breakfast in the heart of the wetlands, we begin our return journey along the Transpantaneira. This is a strategic transition; the early morning hours are prime for spotting species that are less active during the midday heat. The Farewell Safari: Keep your gear ready. The drive back to Poconé offers a high probability of documenting the giant anteater, marsh deer, and specialized bird species that frequent the roadside marshes. We will perform tactical stops at key bridges to capture any final wildlife dynamics.

Arrival at Pequi Lodge

We settle into Pequi Lodge and begin exploring the lodge grounds, where well-positioned feeders attract species such as Hyacinth Macaw and Plush-crested Jay. The relaxed pace allows us to photograph birds in beautiful natural light while becoming familiar with the surrounding habitats.

Exploring the Cerrado

During the afternoon, we venture onto the tracks surrounding the lodge in search of some of the region’s most iconic wildlife. Giant Anteaters are a particular focus, while Red-legged Seriemas, Greater Rheas, and other inhabitants of the Cerrado grasslands provide rewarding photographic opportunities throughout the softer evening light.

Bird Photography Around the Lodge

The early hours are ideal for another session around the lodge’s feeders and nearby woodland, where Hyacinth Macaws, Plush-crested Jays, parrots, woodpeckers, and a variety of other species are often active. We take advantage of the changing light while exploring the area at a relaxed pace.

Pequi Lodge Day 2 PM

Our final afternoon at Pequi Lodge is dedicated to exploring the surrounding landscapes once more. We continue searching for Giant Anteaters, Greater Rheas, and other wildlife that make this transition zone between the Pantanal and the Cerrado so distinctive, adapting our route to the conditions and recent sightings as we enjoy one last session in this remarkable setting.

Sítio Macuquinho Feeders

If time permits, we will stop at the feeders of Sítio Macuquinho, one of the region’s best locations for close-up bird photography. Set on the edge of native woodland, the carefully maintained feeding station attracts a remarkable diversity of species, often allowing for prolonged observations in excellent photographic conditions. Depending on the season and activity, visitors may encounter tanagers, euphonias, aracaris, toucans, woodpeckers, and a variety of other Atlantic Forest birds, making this a rewarding final opportunity to enjoy the region’s rich birdlife.

First Session at the Feeders

After our transfer and check-in, we settle into Trilha dos Tucanos and spend the afternoon at its renowned bird feeders.The reserve has become one of Brazil's best-known bird photography destinations thanks to its carefully designed feeding stations. Fruit, nectar, and natural perches attract a remarkable diversity of Atlantic Forest birds, allowing prolonged views and exceptional photographic opportunities in beautiful forest settings. Depending on the day’s activity, we may encounter Yellow-fronted Woodpeckers, tanagers, toucans, aracaris, and many other forest birds.

Morning — Bird Photography at the Feeders

We begin the day at the lodge’s feeders, when the soft morning light and increased bird activity often create ideal conditions for photography. The diversity is remarkable, with colourful tanagers, woodpeckers, euphonias, and toucans regularly making appearances throughout the morning.

Exploring the Atlantic Forest

In the afternoon, we explore the forest trails and quiet roads surrounding the lodge, searching for species that are less likely to visit the feeders. Mixed flocks, trogons, foliage-gleaners, manakins, and a wide variety of Atlantic Forest birds reward those willing to slow down and observe the forest carefully.

A Final Session in the Forest

Our final morning is dedicated to making the most of Trilha dos Tucanos, dividing our time between the feeders and the surrounding forest according to the light and recent bird activity. This flexible approach gives us another opportunity to photograph some of the Atlantic Forest’s most sought-after species before departing for our next destination.
